The computer won’t start
Windows or Mac hangs on the logo, or you see “Boot Device Not Found”. The laptop may be dead even if the files on the drive are still fine.
Files have vanished
Folders disappear, copies fail, or you get a read error. Don’t keep trying to copy — that can make recovery harder.
“You need to format this disk”
A USB stick, SD card or external drive asks you to format before you can use it. Cancel that prompt and don’t format it — we can often recover the files first.
If the drive is clicking, turn it off now
Clicking, grinding or repeated ticking means the hard drive is physically failing. Leave it running and the files can be lost for good. Don’t open the case. Bring it in for a safe assessment — we won’t open a clicking drive on the workshop bench.
Clean-room lab recovery
If the drive is clicking, dropped or won’t spin, it shouldn’t be opened on a normal workbench. We send those cases to Fields Data Recovery, an ISO-certified clean-room lab with the donor parts needed to rebuild damaged hard drives.

Can you recover files from a laptop that won’t turn on?
Yes. If the screen is smashed or the laptop is dead, but the hard drive or SSD inside is still healthy, we can take the drive out in the Wickford workshop and copy your files to a USB stick. That starts at £79.
What should I do if my hard drive is clicking?
Turn it off and unplug it. Clicking usually means the drive is physically failing. Keep using it and you can destroy the files. Don’t open the case. Bring it in and we’ll assess whether it needs the specialist lab.
How long does data recovery take?
Deleted-file and software recoveries in our Wickford workshop usually take 2 to 5 days, depending on how much data there is. Physically damaged drives sent to the lab take longer — we’ll give you a time estimate before you commit.
Will anyone look at my private files?
No. We only check that the files recovered properly. We don’t browse, copy or keep your photos, documents or work records.
How do I know which recovery option I need?
