A lot of family photos now live in the cloud rather than in albums. From years of family photos on iCloud to a career's worth of achievements on LinkedIn, your digital inheritance is a big part of what you leave your family.

What Exactly is a Digital Inheritance?

It means planning how your online life passes to the people you leave behind. That includes:

• Digital Assets: photos, videos, documents and emails stored on devices or in cloud services.

• Online Accounts: social media profiles, banking details and subscriptions.

• Financial Assets: cryptocurrency, NFTs and digital wallets.

The Risk of Doing Nothing

Without a plan, files and accounts can end up out of reach. Many providers' terms don't automatically let accounts pass to your family. Without a "legacy contact", sentimental files could be locked away for good or deleted by the provider.

Your 2026 Security Checklist

To help make sure your digital legacy is looked after, work through these steps:

• 1. Create a Digital Inventory: list your important accounts and assets, on paper or in a "digital directory".

• 2. Use Legacy Tools: Major platforms now offer built-in succession tools.

  • Apple: Set a Legacy Contact in your Apple ID settings to grant access to photos and messages after you're gone.

  • Google: use Inactive Account Manager to choose someone to be told if your account becomes inactive.

  • Facebook: choose a Legacy Contact to look after your memorialised profile.

• 3. Back Up Externally: don't rely on the cloud alone. Save your most precious photos and documents to an encrypted external hard drive and keep it somewhere safe.

• 4. Secure Your Passwords: use a password manager to store your logins securely. Some offer "Emergency Access" features for loved ones.

• 5. Update Your Will: it may not bind online platforms, but setting out your wishes in a digital will or "letter of wishes" gives your executors clear guidance.
