A laptop charger that is not working is usually the cable or the charger, the DC jack or charging port, or a fault inside the laptop. They fail in different ways, and they are not the same repair. The checks below are the ones worth trying first.
We sort those three before anyone buys a universal charger. The wrong voltage on a barrel tip, or a 30W phone charger on a laptop that needs 65W, is how a cheap lead becomes a board fault. If the laptop runs on the mains but the battery percentage never moves, use the battery not charging guide. This page is about the lead and the port.
If you would rather we look at it, call 07367 652987 or book a Wickford laptop repair. Bring the charger you actually use. Diagnostics are free.
Check the cable and the charger
Try these two checks before you decide the laptop is at fault.
- Another wall socket. Use a different socket, not the same extension lead. A cheap strip can struggle when a heater or a second laptop is plugged into it.
- A known-good charger of the same tip and the same wattage. If a second charger charges the laptop straight away, the charger is the fault. If neither does, we look at the port, or at a fault inside the laptop.
Look at the light on the brick, if it has one. No light, and a cable that bends flat where it leaves the block, usually means the charger has failed. A cracked strain relief is a fire risk as well as a charge fault. Do not tape it and keep using it.
A USB-C lead can fail on its own, even when the brick is fine. A frayed cable that still clicks in will drop power as soon as the laptop moves. Swap the lead before you decide the port has failed.
Check the charging port
Plug in, then move the connector a few millimetres. If the charge light or the Windows icon flickers, the socket is loose. That is the useful result. Stop there. Rocking the plug because it still works when you rest the lead on a book is how the jack tears the pads off the board inside.
If it only charges at one angle, the port is the fault. It charges flat on the table and stops when the lead hangs off a sofa. It charges with the plug pushed up, and not when it sits straight. We treat that as a DC jack or USB-C board, not as a battery, and not as a reason to replace the laptop.
Cable, charging port, or the laptop
| What you see | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| Brick light off, laptop fine on a borrowed charger | The charger |
| Light on, lead frayed, icon drops when the cable moves in the middle | The cable, not the socket |
| Icon only holds at one angle, or the plug feels loose in the case | DC jack or USB-C board |
| Any good charger runs the laptop, but the percentage never rises | Battery or charge reporting. See the battery checklist |
On many 14-inch business laptops the charge socket is a small board of its own. A snapped USB-C port is a board swap. It does not mean the laptop is finished. Barrel jacks on older HP, Dell and Lenovo machines work the same way. The plastic cracks, the socket pulls, and the pads lift.
Charging port and DC jack repair is £65. That is the labour for the port job. If the case is also twisted, tell us. A lid that moves when you plug in can be a hinge as well as a jack, and we would rather see that before the quote.
Liquid near the port is a different problem. Do not keep plugging the charger in. Follow the spill steps and tell us when you book.
When it is still the battery
If every good charger runs the laptop and the only problem is that the battery will not fill, the port is not the job. Go to the five checks before a battery replacement. A swollen palm rest is covered in the battery replacement guide.
What to bring
Bring the charger you actually use, including the spare in the drawer if that is the one that sometimes works. Half of these jobs are a 45W brick on a laptop that left the factory with 65W or 90W.
