A cracked laptop screen looks catastrophic, but in most cases it’s not. Your files usually sit on a drive that has nothing to do with the panel, and a replacement is often worth pricing before you buy new. Before you do anything else:
- Do not press, poke or flex the glass to see if it still works. That can turn a small LCD leak into a full black-out.
- Do not peel shattered glass off a MacBook or touchscreen. Loose shards can cut ribbon cables and fingers.
- If the glass is loose, close the lid gently once and leave it closed. Stop using the laptop on your lap until the panel is secure.
- Plug in an external monitor if you still need files, emails or school work today. The computer itself is usually fine.
What kind of screen damage are you looking at?
Not every “dead” display is the same repair, and the type of damage tells you whether to stop using it today.
Spider-web cracks in the glass
You’ll see these on school Chromebooks, HP and Dell lids, and anything that lives in a rucksack. The picture may still show underneath. The glass is the weak outer layer, and once it’s cracked, more pressure can punch through into the LCD below.
Black blobs, “oil slicks”, or bleeding pixels
That’s usually liquid crystal leaking inside the panel, and it rarely stays small. If you keep using it, the blot tends to spread until the screen is unreadable. Power down if you can work from another device, and book a panel swap rather than waiting it out.
Vertical or horizontal lines, flicker, or a dim/pink picture
These can come from a failing LCD, a display cable problem, or the backlight, the light behind the panel. We can’t tell which from a description, so please don’t flex the lid to find out. It’s worth diagnosing properly so you aren’t quoted for a full panel when the cable turns out to be the fault.
Will I lose my photos, coursework, or work files?
Almost never. A screen replacement swaps the panel and normally leaves the storage untouched. Your SSD or hard drive, your Windows or macOS profile and your documents stay where they are. Back up first where you can.
If the lid shows no picture at all, try connecting a spare HDMI or USB-C monitor. Seeing your desktop on the TV is a good sign the rest of the laptop is working. If nothing appears on any screen, that’s a different fault, and we’ll tell you before you pay for a panel.
Should you repair the screen, or buy a new laptop?

A connector that doesn’t match, such as 30-pin versus 40-pin, or a “compatible” panel with the wrong backlight, can leave you with a dim, pink or dead display and a laptop that’s harder to save.
