A backpack zip, a kitchen worktop, a schoolbag on the C2C. One knock is all it takes. Suddenly the lid has a spider-web of cracks, a black “ink blot” is spreading across the picture, or the display is a set of coloured lines.
A cracked laptop screen looks catastrophic. In most cases it is not. Your files usually sit on a drive that has nothing to do with the panel, and a proper replacement is almost always cheaper than a new machine. At LaunchLayer, I replace cracked, bleeding, and flickering screens for homes and businesses across Wickford and South Essex every week. Here is exactly what to do next.
DO THIS FIRST
- DO NOT press, poke, or “flex” the glass to see if it still works. That turns a small LCD leak into a full black-out.
- DO NOT peel shattered glass off a MacBook or touchscreen. Loose shards cut ribbon cables and fingers.
- DO shut the lid gently if the glass is loose, and stop using the laptop on your lap until the panel is secure.
- DO plug in an external monitor if you still need files, emails, or school work today. The computer itself is usually fine.
1. What kind of screen damage are you actually looking at?
Not every “dead” display is the same repair, and the type of damage tells me how urgently you need to stop using it.
Spider-web cracks in the glass
Common on school Chromebooks, HP and Dell lids, and anything that lives in a rucksack. The picture may still be visible underneath. The glass is the weak outer layer; once it is compromised, further pressure will punch through into the LCD.
Black blobs, “oil slicks”, or bleeding pixels
That is liquid crystal leaking inside the panel. It almost never stays small. Keep using it and the blot spreads until the whole screen is unreadable. Power down if you can work from another device, and book a panel swap rather than waiting it out.
Vertical or horizontal lines, flicker, or a dim/pink picture
This is often a failing LCD, a loose display cable in the hinge, or a backlight issue. It is still a screen (or cable) job, but it is worth diagnosing properly so you are not quoted for a full panel when a hinge cable is the real fault.
2. Will I lose my photos, coursework, or work files?
Almost never. A screen replacement is a structural swap. I do not touch your SSD or hard drive, your Windows/macOS profile, or your documents. If the laptop still powers on, your data is already safe on the inside.
If the lid will not show a picture at all, try a spare HDMI or USB-C monitor. Seeing your desktop on the TV is a good sign the motherboard and storage are healthy. If nothing appears on any screen, that is a different fault — and we will tell you that before you pay for a panel.
3. Repair the screen, or just buy a new laptop?
High-street advice is often “it is not worth fixing.” That is usually because they cannot get the right panel, or they want to sell you a new unit. In 2026 a typical Wickford repair looks like this:
- Windows and Chromebook screens: a flat £99 fitting labour plus the exact trade price of your matching panel.
- MacBook displays: a flat £85 fitting labour plus the panel. Apple lids are a different assembly, which is why the labour is priced separately.
- Turnaround: most jobs are 1 to 3 working days, depending on how quickly the UK supplier can ship your exact model.
If the laptop was already slow, overheating, or on a dying battery, we can talk about combining the screen with a speed refresh — but a cracked panel on an otherwise decent machine is one of the highest-value repairs I do. You keep your files, your licences, and a machine you already know.
4. Why DIY kits and cheap eBay panels go wrong
Modern lids are not the clip-in screens from 2012. Panels are glued, hinge covers hide tiny ribbon cables, and MacBook assemblies include the camera and Wi-Fi antennas. A mismatched 30-pin versus 40-pin connector, or a “compatible” panel with the wrong backlight, leaves you with a dim, pink, or dead display and a laptop that is harder to save.
